C-FAX 1070 Tech Talk August 12

We talked with Alan and Bryan at C-FAX 1070 “Tech Talk” and discussed some tech news and cyber security. Here are some points made below and please check the full show notes at www.shownote.ca

If you have an iPhone, watch out for fake texts claiming that your Apple Pay Wallet has been locked because of 'unusual activity'.  The texts include a link they want you to click-on to get unlocked.  That link takes you to a fake Apple ID log-in page as shown in this screenshot…

…if you were to submit your credentials on the fake page, scammers would be able to access them, then take control of your Apple ID and block you from accessing it.  NEVER click on links in texts or emails like this!

  1. If you're a United Airlines MileagePlus member, watch out for fake emails claiming that the airline is offering you two free tickets to anywhere United flies in the USA, as shown in this screenshot…

…the link takes you to a fake United Airlines page that asks for your MileagePlus account info and credit card details, which the scammers will use to book flights on your account.  NEVER click on links in texts or emails like this!

  1. Here's an easy way to avoid being scammed:  if you get an email or a text about a problem with an account or service, or about a package that can't be delivered, or an invoice/receipt for an item or service you didn't order, or about a refund owed to you, or about a prize you've won, assume it's a scam, especially if it urges you do something right away.  If you think it might be real, check with your bank, or with the merchant, but NEVER call the number, and NEVER click on the button or link.
